Domestic Sales by Australian Winemakers to Remain Solid

Volume sales are influenced by a number of factors, including interest rates and prices.  Interest rates are likely to rise soon but so long as the Reserve Bank of Australia is not too aggressive, volume sales growth should be solid.  Any significant price rises following the cool 2001/02 summer could retard growth in 2003.

A further positive factor is the number of people turning 18 – currently about 274,000 per year, compared with 255,000 per year in the mid-1990’s.  Growth in the number of new legal drinkers was even higher in 1989 and 1990, about 295,000.
